HL2 Demo Recording
Grinder
Hi,i just got HL2 on the sunday and finished it on monday (16hrs straight),amazing game. Now im playing Coastline To Atmosphere....this mod is simply awesome, can't stop playing it.Anyway nice page you got happening here, nice to see a entire site dedicated to single player missions.
Ok now for the question, how do i record demo's in the game....and any info on converting them to avi/mpeg or wmv.

Thanks Grinder out

I suggest using "Fraps" its an awsome demo recorder but its not free
and for some reason compressing the video it gives you doesnt turn
out the best looking, But a free and more indepth and better
quality way to do it is...

1. Open up the console and type in "Record name"
Without qoutes and "name" can be what ever you want to
name the demo your recording.

2. After you type that in and go back into the game it will
start recording. When your done go back in the console and
type in "Stop demo" without quotes.

3. Now it records in .dem format, which isnt really a video format
so you cant just convert it.

4. To make this into a avi or mpeg or wmv its a bit of a process.

5. You have to open up the console and type in "startmovie name"
where "name" is what ever you want it to be.

5. then while still in the console type in "playdemo name" where
name is what ever you named your demo.

6. it will start recording all the frames in that demo. it will save
each frame in .tga format. (NOTE: be sure to set the resolution
to 640x480 or atmost 800x600, because for video this is a good size)

7. Now that you have each frame you have to get a program to convert
the frames into video. I use VirtualDUB.

8. now that you have VirtualDUB Wink you can go to "File--Import movie"
now navigate your way to the frames. which will be in the Halflife 2/hl2 folder.

9. now once it imports all the frames go to "Audio--Wav audio" it will automatically bring you to the .wav file it created when you recorded your frames.

10. Now go to "Video--Frame rate" and click the circle that says match frame rate to sound. or something close to that.

Now save as .avi.

and then use like windows movie maker to compress it and it will look awsome.
better then Fraps.

Hope that helps Smile
hope i didnt miss a step. Cool
